The legal name is Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children but the hospital is better known as The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.  The hospital is an international leader in child health working at the cutting edge of paediatric services, research and training.

 

The hospital is also a leading institution in children’s clinical research focusing on effectively turning research into medicine. Treating sick children and doing research to prevent children’s diseases are activities that go hand in hand.

 

The hospital sees children from across NSW and also from other states and countries.

 

There’s so much to tell you about The Children's Hospital at Westmead. In the past year:

·         Over 26,000 admissions occurred.

·         Average length of stay for in-patients was just over 3 days.

·         Over 600,000 patient visits occurred in outpatient clinics.

·         13,500 operations were performed.

·         13 liver, seven kidney and 35 bone marrow transplants were performed.

·         65 children received a cochlear implant to aid hearing.

·         Approximately 500 children attended the Children’s Hospital School, in four special classrooms.

·         Orthotics Department designed, manufactured, fitted, repaired or adjusted over 2000 rehabilitation aids.

·         Over 40,000 patients presented at the Emergency Department, one of the busiest in the state.

·         The Newborn Screening Service tested 90,000 babies, for over 30 potentially life-threatening  disorders, and we have provided consultancies for the establishment of similar services in South Africa and the Philippines.

·         Approximately 200 parents slept in the Hospital most nights.

·         Physiotherapy staff in the Hydrotherapy pool conducted around 4000 hydrotherapy sessions.

·         Australia’s only 24-hour service, our Poisons Information Centre answered 100,000 calls.

·         Specialist paediatric nurses staffing the Kidsnet telephone advice service, provided guidance to around 2400 callers, a month.

·         We serve over 2,000 meals for patients, parents & staff every day – that’s about 60,000 a month.
